The Beast is an Animal by: Peternelle Van Arsdale

Alys was seven the first time she saw the soul eaters. Twin sisters, they radiated an energy that excited Alys. Through them she felt the wildness of the forest, and The Beast within it. Too late, she learned of their power to destroy.

By the time she is fifteen, Alys knows too much about both the lure and the danger of the soul eaters. She lives in a world of adults who are terrified of their power, and who cower behind high walls and grim rules. Fear of the soul eaters—and of The Beast—rules their lives. Even more, they fear the ways in which The Beast may lurk among them—and within a girl like Alys.

For Alys has a connection to the soul eaters, and The Beast. And she hides a truth about herself that she can reveal to no one, for fear she will be called a witch. As the threat posed by the soul eaters grows, Alys must undertake a journey through the wild danger of the fforest. But the greatest danger is not outside her. Alys’s secret about who—and what—she is terrifies her most of all. And in order to save her world, she must also risk losing herself.”

3.5 stars (Almost got 4 stars, but faltered at the end.)

I was really excited when I found out that my local library not only had this book, but that it was in stock and available for checkout without having to sign up on a wait list.

I absolutely adore the cover and it was a big reason that I wanted to read this book. I really didn’t know what to expect beyond the Old Byd Nursery Rhyme on the back of the book, which drew me in and pushed this book to the top of my TBR list.

The book moves along at a slow but steady pace, which I was ok with. It had the feel of an old fairy tale, dark and creepy. At times it even reminded me of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village, which I really enjoy. Unfortunately once the romantic interest was introduced to the story it lost a bit of its creep factor. The story was still good, it just developed a different feel. I also felt like the end of the book was a wee-bit of a let down. It just didn’t have the bang that I was hoping for based on the creepy way the book started.

On a positive note, this book is a stand alone. It’s gotten harder and harder to find stand alone books now-a-days, so I was happy when this book had an actual ending and not a cliff hanger. This is Peternelle Van Arsdale’s first book and I did enjoy it enough that I will be keeping an eye out for her next book so I can give it a read.

Kings of the Wyld by: Nicholas Eames

Released on February 21, 2017. Kings of the Wyld is Nicholas Eames’ debut novel. It only came to my attention a few days ago in a booktube video by Rhodes Vlog. Right away I knew it sounded like a book that I would enjoy and I’ve already added it to my ever growing list of books that I want to read. If any of you have already read this book I’d love to hear what you thought of it (spoiler free of course.)

“GLORY NEVER GETS OLD.

Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best — the meanest, dirtiest, most feared crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld.

Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk – or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay’s door with a plea for help. His daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy one hundred thousand strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for.

It’s time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld.”

When the threat of an enemy stalking them is brought to light, the call is made to bring them into the secretive world of Cole Enterprise.

Slotted for recruitment by the very agency that stole their chance at a normal life, Mark and Paige have to adjust to their new path as secret agents in a war they didn’t even know existed.

What neither fully understands is that nothing will ever be the same… and some vows are deadlier than others.

5 Stars

I sure do love this series and I never seem to have any trouble jumping back into the world of The Six. Sonya Loveday does a great job of tying all of the books together even though they deal with different leading characters. There was no need for me to reread the previous books in this series because Sonya did a wonderful job of working in a recap of all the major points without it just feeling like a rehash of info. I have yet to be disappointed by one of The Six books and I anxiously look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series as they are released.

My reviews for the rest of this series can be found below:

The Summer I Fell (book #1)

End Note (book #2)

If Ever I Fall (book #3)

Relevance (book #2.5)

Favorite quote:

“To break one’s word was an act of cowardice I did not contain. I’d follow Mark into hell if it meant neither of us was alone.”

The noun form of the adjective “relevant”.

Meaning “important to the matter at hand”.

Recruited from boot camp before graduation after being handpicked by Grant Jackson, Jake is plunged into the mysterious underground world, forever changing his life.

Regardless of his relevance to Cole Enterprise, Jake has a hard time looking past all he has to give up. Can he learn to live in his own shadow in order to protect those he loves?”

5 Stars

Relevance is a novella in The Six Series that falls between End Note and If Ever I Fall. This book fills us in on what happened to Ace after he left for boot camp. I was very happy with the way this book addressed all of the unanswered questions that I still had after reading the first two books. As with the other books in this series, I found myself laughing out loud, biting my lip in anticipation, and even tearing up. Relevance is a wonderful addition to The Six Series and I highly recommend you add it to your collection if you haven’t already.

Love Always,  by: Sonya Loveday & Candace Knoebel

Available August 25, 2015

cover

BBDescription

“I’ve met boys like him before. Rich. Bored. Always wearing a silver-spooned smile. But there is something different about him that piques my curiosity. The way he looks at me, like he is staring through the bars of a gilded cage he’s never left. Like he is one breath away from suffocating beneath a mound of responsibilities. He is different from the rest because he doesn’t wear his money… his money wears him. I just don’t think he knows it yet.

She’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. She’s everything I’ve never been able to be. Carefree. Whimsical. A dreamer. Her laugh is infectious. She is irresistible. I can’t help but be drawn to her with an intensity that steals my breath and muddles my senses. I want to know her, need to know her, but how can I allow myself that liberty when I don’t have the freedom to make my own choices?

Phillip and Maggie think they have it all. Even though they come from opposite backgrounds, they each have bright futures paved out, with no distractions holding them back.

Until the fateful day they meet each other.

After a brief, adventurous time together in The Hamptons, Maggie and Phillip find themselves saying goodbye just as the spark of love flashes intensely between them. Can their budding connection be enough to survive the pulling tides of change, or will they drift apart before they even have a chance to explore what could have been?”

3 Stars (YA/NA – Contemporary romance)

This is a fun read about growing up and becoming your own person. About finding out who you are and what you want in life and learning it’s ok not to be who everyone else expects you to be. I liked both of the main characters and enjoyed watching Phillip grow and change throughout the story and how strong/brave Maggie is. There were a few things that I didn’t care for, like the underage drinking and a couple of other things that I won’t mention because of spoilers, but I will admit that the things that bothered me probably won’t bother most people (I’ve been told that I have “old fashion” values.)

I’ve read other books by both of these authors and really enjoyed them and I will continue to read their books. Please don’t let my 3 star rating stop you from giving this book a try. This was just a book that didn’t quite grab me, but might be one of your favorite reads of the year. You’ll never know if you don’t read it for yourself. 😉

Sonya Loveday, first and foremost is a reader, an avid one. It is of that love that brought her to the realization that this was the answer to the nagging persistent feeling that ‘there’s got to be something more’.
The dream came alive in 2009 when she purchased her laptop and began the tedious step of becoming a published author.
When she’s not reading, she’s writing. When she’s not writing, she’s reading. And when she’s not doing either of those things she’s sleeping, shuttling her children back and forth to school, letting the dogs and cats in and out of the house for the umpteenth time in the last hour and dreaming of a clean house.

Candace Knoebel:

CandaceKnoebel

Candace Knoebel is the award-winning author of Born in Flames-book one in a young adult fantasy trilogy. She discovered in 2009 through lunch breaks and late nights after putting her kids to bed, a world where she could escape the ever-pressing days of an eight to five Purgatory. And an outlet for all the voices residing in her head.

Published by 48fourteen in 2012, Born in Flames went on to win Turning the Pages Book of the Year award in February of 2013. In January of 2014, the last book in the trilogy, From the Embers, was released, thusly completing the trilogy. She now works on the Night Watchmen Series, while guzzling Red Bulls and pretending to be a ninja on Heelys.”

BBDescription
“This is not the way love is supposed to start… is it?When arriving in Scotland, Aiden Jacobson is ready to take on the task of setting up Cole Enterprise’s newest underground headquarters. But when their most-wanted criminal, Robert de Fleur, goes into hiding, Aiden is placed undercover at a local coffee shop. His mission—gather intel from Brenda Anderson, sister of Robert de Fleur, while posing as a barista at The Grounded Bean.
Coffee shop owner Brenda Anderson needs all the help she can get when it comes to keeping the Bean up and running. Unware of his ulterior motives, Brenda brings the mysterious and handsome Aiden in with only one thing on her mind… Airen. Maybe her gypsy-souled niece wouldn’t wander quite so far if she had someone like Aiden to keep her grounded.
Thrown together by circumstance, Airen becomes part of Aiden’s mission when Robert de Fleur emerges from hiding, demanding something none of them can give. Knowing Robert won’t stop until he gets what he wants, Aiden is ordered to stick as close as possible to keep an eye on them.
Staying at Brenda’s seems to be the simplest solution… until he wakes up in Airen’s bed.
Making a valiant attempt to shove his growing feelings aside, Aiden forces himself to walk away and protect Airen from afar. Unfortunately, his plan backfires, and Robert de Fleur uses that weakness to make his move.
Kicking himself for allowing his feelings to get in the way of the mission, Aiden sets out to do what he should have done all along… take out Robert de Fleur once and for all. Can Aiden stick to the mission, or will Airen tear down every defense he puts in place and gain complete entrance to his heart?”

5 stars (New Adult – Action/Romance) In my opinion this series could be read by readers 16 and up.
I have a special place in my heart for Sonya’s Six Series. I fell in love with the first book, The Summer I Fell, and I just can’t help myself, there’s something about these books that makes me as giddy as a school-girl with her first crush. I get so excited every time I read one of the books in this series. Not only are they full of *this can’t be happening to me* romance, but they are also full of action and suspense. Sometimes I like the characters from the beginning and sometimes, like with Airen, I have to give them time to grow on me. There was one character in this book that had me from the get-go, I dearly love Brenda. With her Scottish accent and straight forward way of speaking her mind, she put a smile on my face more than once.
The only time I was ever disappointed while reading this book was when I got to the end and that wasn’t because of how the book ended, it was simply because I’d reached the end of this portion of the journey. As you can probably guess, I can’t wait for the next book in this series to be published!

“Sonya Loveday, first and foremost is a reader, an avid one. It is of that love that brought her to purchasing her first laptop in 2009, and publishing her first novel, Casted, in 2013.
In early 2014, Sonya expanded Casted and then went on to publish Spelled, the sequel to Casted in March, wrapping up the series, and her stint with Paranormal Romance. For now.
Not long after the completion of the Casted Series, Sonya tried her hand at New Adult/Coming of Age, a sub-genre of Contemporary Romance. Thusly, the Six were born with The Summer I Fell, which released at the end of July 2014. The demand from readers was instantaneous, which brought about End Note, the second book of the series in December 2014.
To date, Sonya lives in Central Florida with her husband, and two kids, and is currently working on the fourth book of the  Six Series and a super secret project with fellow author Candace Knoebel. Be sure to keep an eye out for upcoming news on Sonya’s website.”
